Pyrgos

Pyrgos crowns one of Santorini's highest inland hills, a once-fortified village of whitewashed houses spiralling up to the Venetian-era Kasteli castle and the church of Theotokaki, with views across the entire island. Above it sits the Profitis Ilias monastery on the island's highest peak. Long the island's capital before Fira, Pyrgos retains an authentic Greek character, family tavernas, the well-known Pyrgos Restaurant (operating since 1980) and nearby wineries, without the caldera's tourist crush. Property is markedly more affordable here (~€4,000–€5,000/m²), drawing restoration buyers and value-focused investors; analysts project above-average appreciation as buyers look beyond the saturated caldera.
